Week 4 - San Diego

Sunday morning we made our usual trek to St. Brigid's church. It is convenient to have a church within walking distance. They really have a very nice service and the music is inspirational. We have enjoyed going there this Lenten season.  From church we walked to the Broken Yolk on Garnet Street for brunch.  Everyone else must have had the same idea because we had to wait but it was worth it.  Walked home and spent a quiet Sunday doing wash and watching some basketball at the condo. Ron went out to the beach to see the sunset but I stayed home - going to give my legs a little break and be ready for tomorrow.  We walked at least 4 miles today so I'll make it an easy day today.

Monday, it was overcast today and they even were predicting some rain for Wed. This would be the first since the day we arrived.  We decided it was a biking day and thought we would do about a 5 mile trip down toward a new area for us - Mission Bay.  As it turns out it was more like a 12 -15 mile ride. It is amazing the number of bike paths and parks in San Diego.  I guess with good weather all year you have people who will walk, jog, bike etc. every day.  When you don't have to hurdle snow banks it makes sense.  It was nice riding all around Mission Bay past Sea World and over the Mission Bay Bridge.  After our ride we went to 710 right near Crystal Pier for a burger and a brew. Christine came over after work and we went in the hot tub and had dinner. It is so nice to be able to see her this often.

Delicious lunch after a long bike ride!
Tuesday another somewhat overcast day and we were lazy and slept late.  We're getting ready for the trek home and  geared up to finish the cottage and get the other rentals ready for the summer.  After exercising and reading we once again headed out on the bus to explore a different area of San Diego.  We are quite convinced that we can fly out next time and get where we want to go using mass transit.  We headed out and did a little window shopping and then had a nice dinner at Chili's (thanks Chris and Vesna).

Wednesday we ventured out by bus to La Jolla, where Chris' lab is, and met her for lunch. We went to Sushi Mori and enjoyed their luncheon special.  On our way back we walked to beach and the short Scripps Biodiversity Trail, only about 1/2 mile. The views were beautiful, some of the houses unbelievable and we even saw a fixed wing glider and hang glider.  It actually sprinkled a little - I guess there were even some fender benders on the morning commute in areas where it rained.  The rain has been so nonexistent that they make a really big deal out of it even when it's only a few drops.

Thursday, as our days in San Diego are numbered the beach was calling us again today.  Although it was a little cool (Boy are we in trouble when we go home) we put on our long sleeves and sat at the beach for a few hours and read.  It was wonderfully relaxing. We walked down to the Crystal Pier and went to 710 for some beer and wings.  Came home and exercised for about an hour and watched some basketball.  Unfortunately San Diego's team the Aztecs didn't advance. Here are some of the beautiful views of Tourmaline Beach:

Friday, up earlier than usual to take the busses to Point Loma and Cabrillo Monument. At Cabrillo we watched 2 of the movies at the Visitor's Center - one on tidal pools and the other on whales. We enjoyed probably the best view of San Diego from there but the pictures don't do it justice.  It was a little hazy today. Watched the boats and the wildlife and then took the bus down to Liberty Station.  It reminds me of a much larger version of Madison Barracks where they have converted a large area of former barracks into multi-use spaces - museums, retail stores, educational facilities and a residential area.  From there we took the bus to Old Town and had lunch/dinner at Berta's a Latin American restaurant.  Once back in PB I went to Albertson's to get some goodies for our trek home and then settled in to watch the basketball games.

Saturday we went to Christine's house for a BBQ.  She and Jason made carne and pollo asado, beans, rice, guacamole etc. It all was delicious and it was a beautiful day just to sit in the yard and visit.  Chris and Ron put some lights up in the yard. Chris' friend Lindy was visiting from San Francisco and Jason's friends E.J. and Tricia came over and we played a game. I won and Chris likened it to Grandpa and Grandma Spitzer beating the kids at beer pong.  We can beat them at their own game.  Sadly tomorrow is our last day in San Diego. We will go to church and then to opening day at Petco Field to see the Padres versus the Dodgers hopefully it will be a good game.  Chris and Jason will join us and we'll say our good-byes. That's all for now!
