Day 8 - Tucumcari, New Mexico to Barstow, California

Leaving historic Rt. 66 our motto for today is California here we come. We "picked up" Route 66 in Oklahoma City (may Timothy McVie rot in hell) and since it has intertwined with modern route 40.  Hopefully we will make good time and since the speed limit is now 75 that should help our cause. (Ron sets the cruise at 74 and we move along with all the big boys in their trucks.)  We have been on the road for a week now and have established our traveling routine. It will be nice though to put down roots (if only for a month) in San Diego. On the road by 8:00 we were treated to beautiful rocky vistas on our way through New Mexico. This is really an incredible country to journey through with a tremendous diversity of geography. I found myself trying to  take pictures at every turn but I don't think that they do justice to seeing it in person. The panoramic views are exquisite.

Today we crossed New Mexico, Arizona, and crossed into California. That brings us up to 11 states thus far. Paralleling route 40 has been the Santa Fe railroad. If the number of trains we saw indicate the strength of our economy then we are looking good. Not to mention the 1,000 of trucks we jostle with everyday.

Our music selection for the day started off as Tejano but that didn't last too long as accordion music isn't our thing.  Oldies are our favorite and we found a number of them today that unfortunately turned to static.  We've checked in to getting x/m Sirius and was delighted to see they offer a free two month trial.

When leaving Carolina I said that I hoped we had seen our last snow on the trip but we did see some residual snow on the side of the road in Flagstaff and on the mountains, of course. Crossed into the Pacific time zone as we entered California so we picked up an extra hour of travel time making it a nearly 13hour driving day.

Arrived in Barstow at 7:45 . That made our total miles around 3200.   Had dinner at Cocos- we have avoided going to franchises that you can find everywhere - we were delighted with the Chicken Tortilla soup - just something quick it's been a long day. Tomorrow it's on to Yosemite and that's all they wrote.

Nitey nite!

  1. I loved Utah, New Mexico scenery. Dad seemed less impressed with the barren landscapes when we were driving across the country. Maybe he was too busy driving.
